From the Waitaki Valley in Northern Otago, the Otago Station Riesling is a limited parcel of wine. The site is cooler than Bannockburn to the south in Central Otago but slightly warmer than the Gibbston Valley, with warmer springs and autumns and slighly cooler summers. It shows great complexity for such a young wine and appears more structured and fine than the wines of Central Otago. This wine makes a wonderful aperitif and pairs well with aromatic, spicy cuisines such as Thai and Malaysian.
Tasting note
Very pale straw in colour. Evocative aromas of ginger, cardamom, flowers and minerals. The palate is richly textured with a mineral, wet stone element. It is slick and citrusy with lime zest, earthy mineral and crushed chalk notes. The finish is focused and long. An evocative and unique wine.
Awards and Accolades
Bronze Medal
With a restrained bouquet of citrus, minerals and a touch of smoke this off-dry Riesling carries off its fine texture, ripe grapefruit, floral and exotic tropical fruit flavours well. Think ripe kumquat. Sommelier Wine Awards 2011
