Groote Post
Vineyards
Groote Post is a substantial farm of 4,000 hectares. There are 120 hectares under vine and an impressive 2,000 hectares given over to the UNESCO proclaimed Cape West Coast Biosphere reserve.
The vineyards are all planted on south facing slopes at the top of the Kapokberg in the Darling Hills. These vineyards face the chilly Atlantic Ocean and the prevailing south easterly winds keep the vineyards cool during the summer. This cooling effect is illustrated during the Sauvignon Blanc harvest which takes place 3 to 4 weeks later than in Darling and Malmesbury which lie just a few kilometres inland. Deep soils retain water well ensuring that no irrigation is necessary.
Winery
Groote Post's winemaker is Lukas Wentzel who has been with them for more than a decade. The first wines were vinified at nearby Darling Cellars, but since the 1999 harvest they have had their own winery. Located on the property in a restored historic fort, the winery is fully equipped with modern winemaking equipment.
