Recent Reviews & Points for McHenry Hohnen

18 June 2018

We’re delighted McHenry Hohnen have shared with us some of their latest scores. Well done to Julian and the whole team in Margaret River.

White Wines:

McHenry Hohnen Burnside Sauvignon Blanc 2017 - 94 points

“Sauvignon blanc vines planted in 1981. Dry grown. Fermented wild on skins in concrete vats. Chardonnay lees added. Matured in 2800 litre casks. A stylish, textural white wine. Peppery and thistle-like but not overtly so; it has power but it also has subtlety. Woodsmoke, gravel and passionfruit flavours make a seamless run. Excellent.” Campbell Mattinson

McHenry Hohnen Laterite Hills Chardonnay 2017 - 93 points

“It’s grown on three vineyards just south of the Margaret River township. All are grown either organically or biodynamically. All fermented wild and left unsulphured for six or so months. Have to love what Julian Grounds (winemaker) and McHenry Hohnen are up to right now. Fluid, steely, spicy and textural at once. When I say textural I don’t mean creamy, but it has a velvety aspect to the mouthfeel. It’s bright, varietal, not overdone, not underdone. White peach, chalk, meal and cedar spice characters are all here but it moves moves through the mouth at a good clip, both impressing and pleasing as it goes.” Campbell Mattinson

Red Wines:

McHenry Hohnen Rolling Stone 2014 - 95 points

“48% Cabernet Sauvignon | 20% Malbec | 20% Merlot | 12% Petit Verdot from the Hazel Vineyard in the cooler southern climes of Margaret River. It gathers no Moss Wood, perhaps. Deep and deeply savoury style, all black olive, bitter dark chocolate, and roast beef,  yet not without floral perfume and bay leaf top notes. Rumbles with gravelly tannin, pushes firm with flavour, and rides long in the palate. It’s a wine of distinct personality and interest. Acidity feels ‘minerally’ and well settled. The contributions from Malbec and Merlot seem significant here, and in a very good way. Yes.” Gary Walsh

McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road Cabernet Merlot 2015 - 90+ points

“It boasts tannin and length, structure well and truly taken care of, but the fruit rushes up to greet you in a fruit-forward way; in other words, it’s designed to drink well in its youth but it will cellar over the medium term, no problems. Cassis, bay leaves, dust and a sweet balsamic/redcurrant note. Well played.” Campbell Mattinson

McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road Shiraz 2015 - 90+ points

“It’s svelte. It’s supple. It offers black pepper, black cherry, black olive and peppercorn flavours and it’s cleverly run with fine-grained tannin. Its texture, mid-weight flavour, shape and complexity are all safely into positive territory. Nice one.” Campbell Mattinson

McHenry Hohnen Amigos Shiraz Grenache Mataro 2016 - 88 points

“As with the Rocky Road Shiraz this is a soft, pliable, fruit-driven red, the flavours here more in the red licorice and raspberry sphere, with spice notes and meaty nuances rumbling/mumbling both below and above. It works well. It’s fresh, clean and juicy.” Campbell Mattinson
